Atlantic Review ::Helping people with poor eyesightDiplom Volkswirtin Elke Lehning-Fricke volunteers for an organisation to help people with retina degeneration and decreasing eyesight. The NGO's work is quite technical and difficult to describe in English. She answered our three standards questions in German: 1. What are the goals of your NGO? 2. What did you study or teach as a Fulbright grantee? 3. What is your role in this NGO?:
English version further down. Mr. Jason Haserodt of the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has written the following State Alumni article about Elke Lehning-Fricke's work: German Fulbright Alumna Helps People with Retina Degeneration
German Fulbright alumna and Political Economics graduate Elke Lehning-Fricke volunteers for an organization to help people with retina degeneration and decreasing eyesight. Elke volunteers with the NGO Pro Retina, a self-help association of people with retina degeneration and with progressively decreasing vision. The goal of Pro Retina is to generate research funding, which supports the consulting and improving of visual information in public social integration. A yearly research prize, grants, and supplementary research is funded out of the NGO's endowment. Many successes have been reached through their funded research, including advancements in genetics, advancements in the transplantation of retina cells, and "Project Chip im Auge". Because of her own retina degeneration, Elke decided to engage herself in the administration of Pro Retina and to take on the area of public relations. Since 2001, Elke has dealt mainly with the theme of mobility and has lead the committee on mobility, which pushes for the incorporation of visually contrasting designs in the realm of public transportation and buildings. Elke advocates for the construction of barrier-free designs along the lines of the recommendations from the German Institute for Standards to be implemented for the visually impaired, especially because of the increasingly aging society where age-related visual impairments are ever increasing and need to be taken into consideration. The markings on steps in public places, like at train stations for example, and the highly contrasted interior design of busses, are several outcomes of the research project "Optimization of Visual Contrasts as Orientational Aid for People with Visual Impairments" that Elke initiated and was implemented by the Federal Ministry for Family and Senior Citizens. Until now, the handbook for planners and practitioners "The Improvement of Visual Information in the Public Space" published by the Federal Ministry for Health in 1996 was the only scientific study on the optimization of contrasts and foundation for state building regulations in Germany. Elke Lehning-Fricke came to the United States in 1962 through a Fulbright Fellowship. She studied Political Economics at Duke University in North Carolina, concentrating in Transportation Policy.
