Art for an impoverished community in PeruDavid Furman is Professor of Art at Pitzer College in California. He had 3 Fulbright fellowships in the arts, in 1979 to Peru; in 1990 to Costa Rica; in 2000 to Peru:
My 2000 Fulbright to Peru involved service learning. I worked with students at the National School of Fine Arts, teaching them ceramic tile mural process. They completed 2 large scale ceramic tile murals, installed at their school. After that, we worked for about a month with middle school children at Fey y Alegria school, where my students taught the middle school students, and the Fey y Alegria middle school students completed a 5 foot by 25 foot ceramic tile mural installed in the courtyard of their school. These middle school kids are 1st generation from Lima. Their parents are from the jungle and the Andes, who fled and squatted on bare land outside Lima in the 80's to escape the terrorism if the Sendero Luminoso/ the Shining Path. They are a severely impoverished community, economically depressed, but with high spirits for the future.Fulbright Peru has more information about this project. Prof Furman gave a great slide show presentation about his work with the students and the beautiful ceramic tile murals at the Fulbright International Interdisciplinary Conference Humanism in Action. He plans to return to Lima to carry out another service-learning class. |
