Atlantic Review ::Improving Childbirth Conditions In 1997 Dr. Medge Owen, Associate Professor of Obstetric Anesthesia at Wake Forest University, received a Fulbright scholarship to teach at Uludag University in Bursa, Turkey. During her teaching assignment, she helped implement programs in obstetric anesthesia and newborn resuscitation and they have continued. After returning home, Dr. Owen began searching for ways to continue to improve childbirth conditions and safety in Turkey and in other countries. In 2001, Dr. Owen established a non-profit organization, Kybele, Inc., to promote safe childbirth and neonatal resuscitation worldwide through medical education partnerships. Kybele organizes in-country programs to improve essential treatment, technology and training of health care workers to make childbirth safer and less painful. In September 2004, Owen returned to Turkey with a delegation of 8 obstetric anesthesiologists from prestigious universities throughout the U.S. and U.K. to teach regional anesthesia for childbirth. The Atlantic Review is proud to host more information about Kybele as well as Dr. Owen's reports about Kybele's work in Turkey, in Croatia and in Ghana. Write a comment.
